You have now got your Website editor downloaded and installed. We can now go and create a webpage, your very first one. This will not be a complicated webpage just one to get you familiar with using the tools and organizing yourself. We will be using part 6 in the E-book please read it through this part once before you start to create a webpage.

I will point out again that you should disregard anything pertaining to using a domain or a webhost also anything about creating money earning websites at this time. We are here to teach you how to create a webpage and a website. A website is simply a collection of webpages. Further lessons will be provided at the end of this series of lesson if you decide you want to pursue this further.

Special emphasis should be placed on “where” you place your files of your webpages. Remember in lesson “Setting up a File Management System” we created a file/directory structure and in that structure we created a directory called “Your First Website” to put all the files for your first website this includes the webage you will be creating in this lesson. You will find this emphasized time and time again in these lessons that the files save placements are important. You should change the name to the name you want to give your website.

At the end of this lesson you will have created the foundation for your first webpage.

Please now go to part 6 of the Ebook and follow the instructions to create a webpage. After you have completed this part please go to “TBA”

Before we even start thinking about creating a website we need a tool called a “Webpage Editor” in order to do so. A webpage editor allows us to create our website much the same as tools like Microsoft Word allows us to write documents. Fortunately there are some pretty decent free ones you can download. One of these is called “Kompozer” which is the one I and Chris Farrell recommend to use.

To download and install the Kompozer web page editor you should first read through Part-4 of the free website ebook you downloaded for free earlier. Within this chapter you will also see a link to a video that you can view that shows you how to download the webpage editor and install it.

There is a lot of other things written about in this chapter specially about domains and hosting. But remember you do not need them at this time as I want you to learn and be comfortable in creating your website on your PC first. You can decide to go further when you feel that you may like to start making money on the internet.

Remember to save the downloaded file into your “Website-Learning/Tools/Kompozer” folder that you created in the previous lesson on your PC.

When you have finished downloading your free webpage editor and have if you have any queries please send me a comment below.

You should now be ready to go to the next roadmap lesson “TBA”

First, all the instructions here have been tested on Windows XP home and Pro but they should also work on Vista and Windows 7 but are not tested. Anyone having problems should contact me via the comment box below.

Now I am going to make it easy for you to create the file management system structure shown in the lesson “Setting up a File Management System”

I also understand that some may want to put everything on their “C” drive whereas others who have a second drive (usually “D” drive) may want to put it there. So I have created two batch files. pick which one you want to use.

I have created files that will create the structure instantly for you and here is how you do it.

Click on “C Drive” or “D Drive” depending which drive you wish to create your structure on. Save it on your desktop if you can or take a note where it is going to save it.

Go to your Desktop or the location you saved the file to.

Find the file “create-directory-structure-Cdrive.bat” or “create-directory-structure-Ddrive.bat“.

Double left click on the file to execute.

To check click on “Start” > “Programs” >”Accessories > “Windows Explorer”.

Click on “C” Drive or “D” drive.

In the list on the left you should see your new folder “Website-Learning”. You can change the name if you wish by right clicking on the folder icon and selecting “Rename”

For those how would prefer not to execute a file downloaded you can also create the directory structure manually by executing the following commands in sequence.

First click on “Start” then “Run”

Copy and paste the following into the box then click “OK”

cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning

Continue this for each of the following. You must execute in this sequence.

cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\Websites
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\Websites\First-Website
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\Websites\First-Website\images
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\Websites\Second-Website
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\Websites\Second-Website\images
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\tools
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\tools\Kompozer
cmd /c md c:\Website-Learning\learning-Stuff

If you wish to created the structure on any other drive change the “c:” to the “drive:” that you wish.

All the best.

A blog is a particular kind of website where items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened version of weblog or web log. Blogs started out as a sort of online journal but it was quite quickly learnt that they could be used for businesses as well

The author of a Blog, maintains it and adds articles on a continual basis. This is called “blogging”. Individual articles written to the blog are called “blog posts.” The person who posts these is called a “blogger”.

A blog comprises text, hypertext, images, and links (to other web pages) and video, audio and other files. Blogs use a conversational style of writing and often focus on a particular “area of interest”.

The site you are on now is a Blog and the area of interest is teaching how to creating a website.

While in itself setting up a File management System has nothing to do with creating a website it is important that some order be maintained where all the information is put on your PC.

How many times have you said to yourself, “where have I put that file?” and then spent ages trying to find it. It is also very important that all the files associated with your newly created website be in certain folders so when you eventually decide you want to publish to a webhost they will be in the correct order. This enables the Internet to find them and show the contents correctly in your browser.

First peruse the file management system structure below. For a larger image click here.

As some of you may see this is a typical “Windows” directory structure. I have identified what I feel are the necessary folders needed to keep everything easy to find.

The Main Folder is whatever you want to call it e.g. “Website learning”. The website folders should be named after the subject of the website or if you intend to “publish” your website on the web then the domain name of your website on your web host. e.g. I am using this structure for building this blog so the name of my website folder is “websites-for-dummies.info”

You will notice under the website folder there is an “images” folder and also in the same website folder there are all the files associated with the website that is being created. This structure is important as all the images you will use on your website will be put into this folder before you attach them to your website.

So if you have any images somewhere else on your hard disk you will have to copy them to the “images” folder before you can use them. More on this in a later lesson.

Your will notice a folder called “Tools” and under it a folder called Kompozer” This is the first of the tools that you will be using to creat your first website. In later lessons there will be other tools that you will place under the “Tools” folder.

Finally a folder to put all your learning stuff. You will find that you will in some circumstances be able to “download” the videos onto your PC always place them in this folder. For a single subject there may be several videos so it would be best to create other folders beneath the “Learning Stuff” folder to place them in.

As we progress through the the lesson roadmap we may add further folders to the structure as needed.

One final thing, backups. You will eventually have a lot of good work in these folders, I would hate you to lose it. The other main reason for this structure is that it makes it easy to copy everything to a safe place periodically. All you have to do is pick up the folder and copy it to a CD, memory stick or a backup hard drive for safe keeping.

Now, does everyone know how to create such a directory structure under Windows? probably not. If so go to “How to create a directory structure” to find out how then off to the next lesson at “Downloading and Installing a Webpage Editor”. Have fun.

.

If you have reached here you should have already downloaded the Free Website Ebook “Create Your First Website By 3.45 this afternoon”. If not please click on the image on the far right to obtain it.

The very first thing you should do is read the Ebook from beginning to end. Do not try to start and implement anything in the book, just read it. Do not try in this first pass to comprehend everything as I will be explaining it in detail. The book is going to be used as a template that will become a roadmap to creating your first website.

The roadmap will not follow all the chapters in sequence but will guide you through creating your first website and viewing it without the need to use or buy hosting, domain name or anything as discussed in the earlier chapters.

You will use a website template that already exists and learn to modify it to your own profile.

It is important to understand that we will be using free versions of the videos from Chris Farrell’s membership site. If you become a member of his site then there are a vast additional number of videos, ebooks and articles that you can use as well as becoming a member of the forum where there are may other members that can offer advice.

After finishing this series I will start another that is geared to members joining the membership site and going into more advanced matters.

Throughout the “Creating Your First Website” pages you will find links that will describe any subsidiary items (e.g. “what is a blog” or “What is a zipped file”) This is for the absolute beginner who may not understand these terms.

Please go to the “Lesson Roadmap” page to start your first lesson.

Good learning

Hi, glad to have you here at my Websites For Dummies Blog.

Wow you think you are a dummy! I am sure you do not really believe that. If this was the case, any one who doesn’t know something about a certain subject could be called a dummy. Albert Einstein probable knew nothing about building a website so I wouldn’t have been surprised if I had him as a visitor to my “Websites For Dummies” Blog. You would not have thought him a dummy. Mind you websites weren’t around when he died in 1955. Coincidentally the first website was designed by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee who was born in 1955. The first website was built by him at CERN and came live in 1991. Gee! this website business is so young only 19 years old.

Terms like “Websites For Dummies” are not considered derogatory these days. Just look at the famous “XXX for Dummies” series of books (Not me by the way, I wish) that are now sold by the millions. I Consider the term “Dummy” or Dummies” as describing that a person has something yet to learn.

So getting back to the crux, what is this site “Websites For Dummies” all about and why am I creating it. Well I decided to create it because I joined a membership site called “Create Your First website by 3.45 this Afternoon” but before I go any further I should introduce myself.

My name is Wilf Gerrard-Staton, I am retired and have worked in the computer industry for over 35 years. Before that I was in the Royal Air Force (British) where I was trained on Flight Simulators where I was first introduced to Computers. When I left the R.A.F. in 1974, I migrated to Australia where I entered the Computer Industry in earnest. Starting out as a Computer Engineer then progressively an Engineering manager, Technical Support manager, and then started on my own as a computer consultant. Over time I worked for Control Data, Honeywell Information Systems, Wang and eventually got a contract with Kodak looking after all their systems across the Asia Pacific region.

I retired a few years ago to the country in Australia where my wife and I moved a house built in 1868 and extended it. You can see it at “Mirboo In the Strzelecki Ranges” which is a community blog I started. We also own the big heritage hall you can see in the picture on the first page.

You may ask, with all this heavy stuff behind me why would I want to join a membership site called “Create Your First website by 3.45 this Afternoon”?

It was not because I did not know how to create a website it was because I was a dummy in a certain areas. The membership site also stressed that it was important to build a list of people in order to make money on the Internet. This, I wanted to do and also how to build a certain type of website in order to do so. It also taught many other things I knew little about in the area of Internet marketing. The Membership site taught one how to do all this and rather than plow through books and things I decided that joining the site would be the quickest way to learn. Chris Farrell, who was an absolute dummy two years ago, created the membership site. He is British and became so successful that he was able to afford to move to Beverley Hills and continue from there.

I found that the way he presented all aspects of creating a website so down to earth and easy to understand that I have stayed a member even though I now know all I need to know about creating lists. I have also made and helped many friends on this site through the memberships forum.

What this Blog is about (What is a Blog?) is guiding you through the first stages of creating your first website using his free Ebook.

Now one of the reasons I have created this “Websites For Dummies” Blog is that I found many new members were getting lost among the richly endowed membership site. They were also not following strict steps to learning, diving off in all directions and not getting any results. Lets face it you are a “Dummy” you do not take a few lessons in learning how to drive a car and suddenly dive off and try driving a tank.

So bear with me this will become a roadmap guiding you through all the scripts and videos that Chris has developed in order for you to eventually become a whiz at creating money making websites (or Blogs).

“Websites For Dummies” will use the Ebook as a guide and will make you follow the steps in order to produce your first website. If you decide to move away from these steps, I am afraid I cannot help you.

Many times I have seen questions on the membership site forum where members have been asking as question about something that makes it obvious that they have not followed the steps, watched the appropriate videos or attended any of the free webinars presented by Chris.

So the first order of the day is to sign up for the free Website Ebook. Just fill in the form you will find on this site with your first name and a valid email address. There is no obligation for anything whatsoever. If you want to be coached though, you will need to get it.

Once again welcome to the “Websites For Dummies” Blog get started by visiting “Your Journey Starts Here”
